Skeletal muscle - Skeletal muscle is a type of striated muscle, attached to the skeleton. Skeletal muscles are used to facilitate movement, by applying force to bones and joints; via contraction.
Skeletal-muscle pump - Skeletal-muscle pump is the pumping effect of skeletal muscle on venous blood flow. During activity the intramuscular pressure exceeds that required to force blood through the veins, back to the heart.
Rhabdomyolysis - Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of skeletal muscle due to injury, either mechanical, physical or chemical. The principal result of this process is acute renal failure due to accumulation of muscle breakdown products in the bloodstream, several of which are injurous to the kidney.
Crush syndrome - Crush syndrome (also traumatic rhabdomyolysis or Bywaters' syndrome) is a serious medical condition characterized by major shock and renal failure following a crushing injury to skeletal muscle. Cases commonly occur in catastrophes such as earthquakes or war, where victims have been trapped under fallen masonry (the syndrome was discovered by British physician Eric Bywaters in patients during the 1941 London Blitz).
