Microarrays for the Neurosciences: An Essential Guide by Daniel H. Geschwind,

Microarrays for the Neurosciences: An Essential Guide by Daniel H. Geschwind,
The effort to sequence the human genome has generated a new discipline, "functional genomics," or the study of the relationship between the genetic code function of central nervous system and its biologic potential. Gene expression studies are made possible not only by the decoding of the human genome, but by the development of new technologies. The preeminent technology in this area, DNA microarrays, is helping to revolutionize the field of neuroscience. Rather than looking at one gene at a time, researchers using DNA microarrays can monitor the expression patterns of large numbers of genes simultaneously. Bridging the traditional gap between molecular neurobiology function of central nervous system and systems neurobiology, DNA microarray technology has the potential to elevate molecular genetic studies of the nervous system to the system level. This book provides a comprehensive guide to the use of DNA microarrays in neuroscience function of central nervous system and provides approaches that are applicable to other complex biological systems. Human nervous system tissue is remarkably complex. The number of cell types, the architecture, the developmental program, function of central nervous system and the importance of environmental factors in development function of central nervous system and functioning all pose particular challenges to the researcher using gene expression studies. After an overview of the technology, the book discusses array scanning function of central nervous system and image application, statistical methods for array analysis, specific applications of gene expression studies in the central nervous system, the use of postmortem human tissue, function of central nervous system and novel methods for using microarray data to develop hypotheses about regulatory networks.

Central nervous system - The central nervous system (CNS) represents the largest part of the nervous system. Together with the peripheral nervous system, it has a fundamental role in the control of behavior.

Central nervous system infection - Central nervous system infections are those infections of the central nervous system (CNS).

Oligodendrocyte - Oligodendrocytes (or oligodendroglia) are a variety of neuroglia. Their main function is the myelination of nerve cells exclusively in the central nervous system of the higher vertebrates (in the peripheral nervous system the same function is carried out by Schwann cells).

Peripheral nervous system - The peripheral nervous system or PNS, is part of the nervous system, and consists of the nerves and neurons that reside or extend outside the central nervous system--to serve the limbs and organs, for example. Unlike the central nervous system however, the PNS is not protected by bone or the blood-brain barrier, leaving it exposed to toxins and mechanical injuries.
